Improve IT Muscle Tone

Most organization decision makers approach IT investments like they might approach exercise—They’re too busy, need the right regimen, have higher priorities. Do you wait until things break before making technology investments?

Even the busiest organization can benefit from the automation of technology management and planned investments in technology. Here are just a few ways how:

  • Reduce Server Downtime: Ensure that your technology service provider uses tools that log server events to observe trends that when resolved can eliminate expensive server downtime.
  • Reduce Service Response Time: Ensure your IT service team uses remote service delivery tools because they significantly reduce response time by eliminating physical presence.
  • Implement Data Protection: You business creates data daily to support both customer and internal needs. Ensure it is protected at multiple levels and can be restored easily.
  • Enhance Service Desk: The service desk is the user’s gateway to all things IT. Implement an issue tracking system to flag service requests and gage quality of customer service.
  • Budget for Good Service: The maxim, “you get what you pay for,” is true of IT as well. Determine the level of service your organization needs to be effective and budget for it.

The Top Ten Tackiest Domain Names

I’m willing to bet that most of us have input a random word or phrase into the computer and waited to see what type of site comes up. It’s not surprising that more than a few pages are placemats for names that will never sell. What is surprising are the ones that do. Here is a list of the top ten worst names according to Independent Sources:

  • A site called “Who Represents” where you can find the name of the agent that represents a celebrity. Their domain name… wait for it… is www.whorepresents.com
  • Experts Exchange, a knowledge base where programmers can exchange advice and views at www.expertsexchange.com
  • Looking for a pen? Look no further than Pen Island at www.penisland.net
  • Need a therapist? Try Therapist Finder at www.therapistfinder.com
  • Then of course, there’s the Italian Power Generator company… www.powergenitalia.com
  • And now, we have the Mole Station Native Nursery, based in New South Wales: www.molestationnursery.com
  • If you’re looking for computer software, there’s always www.ipanywhere.com
  • Welcome to the First Cumming Methodist Church. Their website is www.cummingfirst.com
  • Then, of course, there’s the art designers Speed of Art, and their whacky website: www.speedofart.com
  • Want to holiday in Lake Tahoe? Try their brochure website at www.gotahoe.com

Tech Trends To 2010

You may have noticed that tech today has shifted noticeably from where it was ten years ago. We list below some of the most notable changes:

  • Global Outsourcing: Global outsourcing’s impact has been much greater since the turn of the century, even though it began much earlier. IT services from far flung vendors can now be procured much more easily.
  • Server virtualization: This technology is the backbone of cloud computing. Server virtualization has revolutionized the way IT purchases and provisions server horsepower.p>
  • Online purchasing: After a decade steady evolution, e-commerce is now commonplace. Businesses save time an money by buying all kinds of commodities and goods online.
  • Cloud Computing: The number of organizations sourcing IT applications delivered over the Internet is on the rise. Use of cloud computing is allowing businesses to focus on their core competencies while relying on automated and affordable technology services and solutions.
  • Tech Devices Go Mainstream: Popular consumer devices for photo, audio, video, location, and voice have all been fundamentally changed by the adoption of technology and integration with data: digital cameras, smartphones, GPS devices, tablets, even home appliances. This has resulted in an end-user-driven technology revolution.
  • Social Networking: Social networking and mobile apps are rewriting the rules on how you get to know and interact with people world-wide! These trends represent a whole new way of gathering information, staying up to date, and even doing business.

2-Steps to Job Hunting with Social Networking

The concept of using contacts to hunt for a job is age-old. The perennial favorite job hunters guide, “What color is your parachute?” stresses the importance of researching and assessing jobs before making the move. The benefit of social networking sites is that they have made this process more efficient. To leverage social networking sites for job hunting, you need to make it a two-step process:

Develop Online Presence: This involves setting up an account with the most popular and effective social networking sites; posting your professional profile; and hunting for contacts who could help you with your job search. You also need to become active in your selected groups by writing blogs or articles of value to those you seek to employ you. This takes time and must be done much before you’ll be actively looking for a job.

Leverage Contacts: Once you have an active online presence, you’re in a good position to tap your friends and contacts online to let them know you’re looking and what types of position are of interest to you. Many contacts may have positions that are already open at their work places. Contacts will be able to share their experiences with employers you may be considering. You’ll also be in a position to enquire about growth prospects for your position from contacts already working there.

Book Review

The One Minute Manager
by Kenneth Blanchard and Spencer Johnson

People invariably look to their boss for praise, a feeling of connection, and a sense that their work is meaningful. Bosses, meanwhile, worry about the need to address performance problems, redirect the work process, or any one of a number of contingencies that arise in the course of leading a team.

To help facilitate the critical process of communicating objectives and structuring the corporate environment, Ken Blanchard and Spencer Johnson wrote this bestselling guide to saying what needs be said as effectively as possible. By following the clear, accessible advice that the authors provide, you'll be able to take a minute to dispense praise or reprimands, set goals, and do much of the human work upon which management depends.

An inspiration to thousands of leaders, this is a business book that should be read and reread as often as possible. Good ideas never die.
